Darkthrone's Goatlord (originally recorded in 1991 but released in 1996) is a fascinating transitional
artifact. Acting as the instrumental bridge between their death metal debut and their legendary
black metal era, the album offers raw, eerie, and ugly metal characterized by a bizarre yet haunting
atmosphere.
Originally recorded as instrumental rehearsal tapes in 1990–1991 meant as a follow-up to Soulside Journey,
it features mid-paced, technical death/doom metal. The band pivoted to black metal before its release,
ultimately shelving it until Fenriz added vocals in 1994, ending with this final released versionwith vocals.
