Hailing from the always-vibrant Polish black metal scene, THROAT are miasmic morbidity personified. While so many of their domestic contemporaries honor the paradigmatic sounds of the Temple of the Fullmoon, THROAT instead mine a wider, wilder style of black metal that looks both east and south. Theirs is a clanging, crunching sound that variously nods to Necromantia, Mortuary Drape, Hungary's Tormentor, early Samael, and fellow Polish iconoclasts Cultes des Ghoules: catacombed, ancient, unsettling. To date, THROAT released the debut demo New Flesh Nectar in 2020 on the esteemed Fallen Temple label, and now conspire with PRIMITIVE REACTION to add that portentous recording with a new EP titled Blood Exaltation. Totaling four tracks in 33 minutes, the Blood Exaltation collection stands as a terrifying testament to THROAT's eldritch black metal horror: a bridge from the past to the present, scorched by fires unknown but reeking of delirium-inducing sulfur all the same. The potency of the two-song Blood Exaltation EP presents the trio in their current sonic incarnation, more gutted and (s-l-o-w-l-y) grinding, a protracted spelunk among shapeshifting landscapes whereby throat, strings, and skin chafe together in a vulgar manner. The earlier New Flesh Nectar demo displays THROAT at their most atmospheric; partially due to the distant recording, partially due to more wide-open spaces they were sowing, the two songs on this introductory recording nevertheless retain a palpitating creepiness, particularly when they drop the tempo down to a tribal trudge - an element they'd explore further on this collection's namesake recording. Shed thy skin for this Blood Exaltation!

An otherwise-new entity, Valravn nevertheless evince a mastery beyond their short time as a band with their first public recording, the full-length Prey. Arriving very fully formed, Valravn's debut album no doubt displays characteristics of Finland's now-world-renown black metal sound - cryogenic melody, raw 'n' rugged execution, an unapologetic assertion of traditionalism - but in other, more telling aspects, Prey asserts its own identity counter to this prevailing paradigm.

Now, as the summer heat continues to blaze after the revelry of midsummer, Valravn return with a second full-length, The Awakening. Tellingly titled, The Awakening displays yet more sides to this still-unfolding entity. To be sure, Valravn's poise and power are firmly accounted for here - you can still FEEL every note, so vital, virile, and vivid - and they've even added a bit of death metalled muscle, too, but the songwriting itself is where their second album truly takes flight. Sharp and yet never sterile, thanks to a production that's on the right side of polished, there's an acute balance of contrasts across The Awakening's 44-minute runtime; each of the album's eight songs features some twist of melancholy and militancy, of bursting color and bristling monochromatism, of stoic resignation and steadfast determination, of man-on-the-mountain spaciousness and stuck-in-the-catacombs claustrophobia. Concluding with the literally breathtaking "Charge of the Last Cavalry," The Awakening consolidates all the strengths of its predecessor and indeed leads Valravn into a new charge for glory. The fires of Finnish black metal have yet to be vanquished!

Twenty long years ago in 2003 VULTURE LORD gifted us with their tremendous debut album "Profane Prayer", while still even before that the band started back in 1997 offering up a couple demos and split releases. Now they have returned to reclaim their rightful throne amongst the blackened hordes with their recent and absolutely fantastic second full length album "Desecration Rite". Released 2021 in Europe by ODIUM RECORDS while the US version is being pressed in conspiracy by DARK HORIZON RECORDS late 2023. VULTURE LORD has existed in one form or another for more than thirty years, and "Desecration Rite" is a celebration as well as a monument of idolatry for underground black metal music worshippers and Norwegian Black Metal followers alike! We must mention the fact that this album was composed by Nefas of URGEHAL before his untimely death, and the recording of this album was completed by his talented comrades from such bands as URGEHAL, CARPATHIAN FOREST, BEASTCRAFT, ENDEZZMA, and SHINING! "Desecration Rite" is old school devotion to the black / death / thrash metal spirit of the 90s as well as in homage to their fallen comrade Nefas. "Desecration Rite" offers us a fitting tribute which uses the last song writing material of Trondr Nefas, who departed this world of shit in 2012. Some including the band consider VULTURE LORD as Death Metal to which we would agree that there are some overwhelming parallels, similarities, and atmospheres. However, we also believe VULTURE LORD are keeping true to the ice-cold spirit of grimness and hate that saturates within true black metal, as well as the thrash styled fast-riffing dominance presented on this monumental album. VULTURE LORD actually show many traditional hallmarks of all the mentioned sub-genres at their finest delivering a focused incendiary breakneck paced album that will captivate the most ardent underground fan from start to finish. An unrelenting ice-cold fist banging demonic thrill ride of an album that DOES NOT disappoint! Death Metal fanatics, black metal purists and old school thrashers will be mesmerized listen after listen to the excellence that lies within "Desecration Rite". WINDSWEPT is yet another creative vehicle for the esteemed Roman Saenko, known worldwide for his pioneering work in Drudkh and Hate Forest among others. While most of his musical creations stem from black metal, thankfully, WINDSWEPT is consistent in this regard and unapologetically restrictive, retaining Saenko's characteristically hypnotic riffing coasting atop a wintry atmosphere. Now, after a couple albums with Season of Mist, WINDSWEPT join forces with PRIMITIVE REACTION, who released the debut album of his PRECAMBRIAN project in 2020, with the brand-new mini-album Der eine, wahre König. Uniquely, this four-song / 28-minute recording features two equally esteemed vocalists - Winterherr of Darkspace and Paysage D' Hiver, and Meilenwald of Ruins of Beverast - with both men splitting duties evenly. Indeed, with such a structure, Der eine, wahre König is a portrait of evenness: unwavering, unflinching, immovable, engrossing. Movement manifests in subtlety, as is Saenko's stock in trade; further and deeper listens reveal a wealth of nuance even if it's not always apparent. All four tracks comprising the record feature all-German lyrics, evoking a different-yet-related sense of austerity from the mainman's proudly Ukrainian ruminations, and both vocalists rise to the challenge of pushing their respective throats to the limit whilst remaining rooted to WINDSWEPT's core consistency.
