SUMMON: FALLEN – 2005, 4.26.2005
MORIBUND CULT

“We refuse to compromise our ideas of music and life to fit the standards of metal classification. This is not a popularity contest, and anything else would simply be false. The people who know us know how we feel about them in a world littered with image idiots and fantasy persona. Summon will always remain true too what’s important - the music. Everything else is trivial and truly beneath us. This album is dedicated to the fans of extreme, brutal metal. We shall conquer.”

These words were spoken by Summon in 2002, prior to their debut release for the MORIBUND CULT, 2003’s obliterating …And the Blood Runs Black. And these words still hold true today, upon the release of Summon’s latest hellish assault for the CULT, the cryptically titled Fallen. Once again maintaining the lean ‘n’ mean trio of founders Xaphan (vocals/guitars) and Necromodeus (bass/vocals) with human-tornado drummer Josh Moore, Fallen is every bit an amplified version of its not-inconsiderable predecessor. Having further honed their live chops the past couple years and especially as headliners of a spring 2003 tour with Thornspawn and Excommunion, all the Summon rudiments are firmly in place: skin-lacerating razor-riffs, jackhammering assault-drums, and black-blood belches from the abyss. No compromises, no prisoners taken.

But Fallen also displays a side of Summon that will set them ahead of the black/death metal competition: SONGS. Rooted in the catchy speed metal of the glorious ‘80s but harnessing the chaotic power that’s come to characterize Summon, Fallen is a collection of immediately memorable black/death anthems that sacrifice not one iota of intensity. Simply witness album highlights “Fast as Hell, Loud as Fuck” and “On Wings of Chaos,” aptly titled both, and try arguing otherwise.

Not surprisingly, such steely reserve has been a focal point of Summon’s for nearly 15 years. The band was begun back in 1991 by Xaphan and Necromodeus, with the intent of creating the extreme music they grew up listening to. Shortly after they recorded a basement demo entitled Devourer of Souls, they split ways. It was not until 1995, after parting ways with their previous legendary band Masochist, that Summon would rejoin forces. During these years of drunkenness, Summon put out another demo in ’95, Fire Turns Everything…Black, and in 1996 recorded the classic debut, Dark Descent of Fallen Souls.

After many shows, drugs, booze, spikes, fire and blood, things started to unravel again due to the band’s stagnant musical direction, which would all change once Summon recruited a new drummer and a new form of writing started. After only three months of rehearsing, Baptized By Fire was recorded, an album that finally captured Summons’ fierce, violent sound. After more shows, drugs, booze, spikes, fire, blood and a rotating lineup of second guitarists, Summon recorded an experimental MCD in 2001 entitled No Thoughts from The Sky. Although an interesting work in itself, Summon were displeased by its results, and instead looked to their roots for what they did best. Thus, in 2002, Summon recorded …And the Blood Runs Black with producer James Murphy (Death, Obituary, Testament) to truly capture what they’ve always been about: the music. While pushing their sound to devastating heights, their joining forces with the CULT was a match made in Hell, with one goal in mind: to crush all in their path!

And again, the same can be said of Fallen – one hundred times over. Recorded at Hellion Studios (Cephalic Carnage, Anwyl, Throcult) for maximum killing capacity and featuring gatefold cover art by Petagno (Motorhead), Fallen is such a momentous event that a special limited edition of the album will be released: A bonus DVD of the whole album mixed in 5.1 surround sound – the FIRST black/death metal record to be receive such a treatment! – and a bonus live video. Taken by itself, for how intense and uncompromising these vets are, Summon’s Fallen should appeal to fans of early Morbid Angel and Slayer as much as those of later Satyricon and Immortal. Attack!
